Every year, WACUBO participates in a Service Project in connection with the Annual Conference. Recently, WACUBO re-envisioned its service project to incorporate and encourage the higher education presence while providing a valuable community service to local schools with youth and students who may not have thought higher education was an option available to them.
This year, we ask that you help us support Casa Blanca Community School, the only tribally-run BIE elementary school located on reservation land in the Phoenix area. Casa Blanca is a Title 1 school with 100% of its 266 grade K-4 students eligible for free-or-reduced price meals. They are fortunate in that the Gila River community wanted their students to have a new school and made this happen. Construction was completed in August 2021. However, the library sits empty (its previous library housed books that were more than 20 years old). Principal Kim Franklin identified this as their highest priority.
The WACUBO Service Project goal will be to fill the library with $10k in selected hardcover book titles Casa Blanca identifies, and we will leverage member gifts with match challenges from business partners.
We will also ask members to bring:
- College/university t-shirts/sweatshirts
- College stickers to brand the books (example: ‘This book donated by UCI’ and then affix a UCI sticker)
- College pennants to decorate the library.
We are asking all members who can help to purchase items off the Amazon Wish List. Please note that hardcover books are preferred. Please select Shipping Address: Principal Kim Franklin/CASA BLANCA COMMUNITY SCHOOL
